The Area

Our village, St Pons de Mauchiens is a quiet 20 min amble through the vineyards. Here you will find a bar/bistro, which serves good food and a general provisions shop. There are shops, bars and restaurants in St Pargoire, two min drive away and supermarkets in nearby Pézenas (10 min) and Béziers (25 min).

Le Pressoir is stocked with maps, guidebooks and leaflets to guide you around the area. We are perfectly placed for the Mediterranean; the nearest beaches can be reached in just 20 minutes. As well as beaches, there are beautiful lakes, mountains and gorges within one hours drive. The area has large numbers of medieval towns and villages to visit including Pezenas, St Guilhem-le-Desert and the Cite of Carcassonne. For the more adventurous the Spanish border can be reached in about 90 minutes and a further hour takes you to Barcelona. Below are some of the nearby attractions.

Just a 10 min drive away is Pézenas, a very pretty medieval town with an abundance of shops, cafes and restaurants. The centre is full of buildings dating back to the 16th & 17th centuries. There is also an excellent market on Saturday which provides an ideal opportunity to stock up on the wonderful regional delicacies, fresh salads and vegetables, meats, cheeses, seafood and of course the local wine. Take a stroll through the old town with its unique craft and clothes shops and finally stop at one (or two) of the many bars or bistros in the Place de 14th Juliet.

Our gateway to the Mediterranean and only 20 min drive from Le Pressoir is Meze; a delightful little town with a wonderful harbour and a super street market. It is situated on the Bassin de Thau. There are clean beaches to both sides of the harbour.  The water is shallow and ideal for children. Take lunch at one of the many restaurants surrounding the harbour, where you will find some of the most wonderful seafood dishes.

Just 30 min drive from Pézenas is the holiday resort of Cap d'Agde. It has some 14 kms of fine beaches and many attractions for the children like the famous Aqualand with its giant flumes, water slides and wave machine as well as a super tots area for the very young. There is also much to explore nearby...to the west follow the Canal du Midi (World Heritage Site by UNESCO), and visit the cities of Béziers, Narbonne and ‘The Cite’ at Carcassonne.
